Communication and Information for Democracy:
One of the key components of grassroots democracy is to be able to examine issues from various points of view to help clarify ideas and proposals and, therefore, our understanding of issues for the benefit of society, at the local, regional, national and international levels. The democratic process requires information and communication which is basic to election freedom and participation in society, including materials to promote dialogue, ideas and analysis of different social issues.
Communication and Information for Freedom of Expression:
Access to communication and information is the way to ensure freedom of expression. It is very important for the less visible sectors of society to be given a voice through greater access to both the alternative and mass media. Freedom of expression is a basic need and a fundamental human right for civil society in order to strengthen participation, dialogue and, therefore, democracy. The promotion of freedom of expression strengthens access to information and to communication, producing a much more participative society.
Communication and Information for Social Change:
Mass communication promotes culture, consumption patterns, socially-accepted stereotypes, and, very often, discrimination. For civil society to confront this, we have to take ownership of communication and information as a right and as a tool, in order to promote a discourse of participation and democratic values such as dialogue, respect, tolerance, diversity, peace, etc. On the other hand, this taking ownership requires responsibility and needs to be valued as a means to transform society, for which the main actors are the social movements. Through their demands, they take their place with the various sectors of society excluded from political and economic processes and which need to be made visible in order to gain recognition.
